More so than any other book in the Earth’s Children seriesThe Mammoth Hunters relies on the tension created by the relationships between the characters to create a storyline, in that Ayla’s susceptibility to being deceived or jeean, caused by her upbringing among essentially honest people, leads the more complicated, obstinate, and passionate Jondalar to make multiple errors.

It is the Mamutoi master carver of ivory—dark-skinned Ranec, flirtatious, artistic, magnetic—who fascinates Ayla. She knows she was raised unconventionally, but until the Summer gathering of the Mammoth Hunters she doesn’t realise quite how different her way is Auel released in You could have had some interesting stories just with Ayla and Jondalar living with the Mamutoi.

I have to say, for someone who’s meant to be so brilliant, Ayla was pretty stupid about the whole love triangle thing. The wonder in Talut”s eyes was shared by the rest of the band, particularly a young girl of twelve years.

The earth’s children series, is an exceptional read on the early days of man, great mammmoth of characters including the animals and plants, great hunts, and interactions between the different clans. I was wrong, a I was hooked auek this series by the first book, “Clan of the Cave Bear”, a fun, well-written novel with excellent character relationships. EVERYBODY that meets her is in love with her or if they don’t like her, it is only because they hate things that are ‘different’ and she wins them over in no time with her amazingness.
