I’ve found that reading them with a still mind, not allowing myself to get hung up on the phrasing, and calmly watching the text as it evolves over the course of a sutta can itself act as a meditation.

I am very happy with this addition to my library. Today the canonical literature survives nikwya three sets, the Pali canon, the Chinese canon the “Agamas”and two partial Tibetan sets, the Kangyur and the Tengyur. Reading the book through gave me a feel for life in antuttara India.
Fortunately for us it is no longer necessary to enter an Asian monastery, learn the Pali language, and memorize the many thousands of pages of the Pali canon.
The suttas were compiled into collections called “Nikayas,” of which there are aanguttara, each organized according to a different principle. Bhikkhu Bodhi suggests that the new reader approach the book thematically before attempting to read the volume through. Within the four volumes of the Nikaya’s, the Long and the Middle Aanguttara Discourses are more accessible to most readers than the Numerical Discourses.
Bhikkhu Bodhi is also incredibly adept at pointing out obvious discrepancies, possible mis-translations and understandings, and so on. Thank you Bhikkhu Bodhi! The Anguttara Nikaya should probably be read last.
